- Graded School expects counselors to be involved in their professional practice both in the classroom and outside of it. In addition to having social/emotional learning expertise, Graded expects all of its counselors to be broad-based educators, enthusiastically collaborating with students, colleagues, parents, and administrators to support the social/emotional well-being of all members of the school community. Counselors need to be genuinely committed to the school’s mission and core values.
- The primary purpose of a Graded Social Emotional Lower School Counselor is to provide comprehensive developmentally appropriate social, emotional, and academic support for Graded students in the Upper School.
- Minimum Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Education and/or Psychology, with a certification in counseling. A minimum of counseling experience, preferably in American International Schools. An international mindset, with a preference for counseling experience or post secondary education in an international context. Knowledge of, and experience with the major areas of responsibility and specific tasks listed below.
- Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Communicate with parents, faculty, and administration regarding student progress, academically, emotionally, and socially.
- Working with students:
- Provide short-term individual and small group counseling to offer social, emotional, and academic support.
- Work in partnership with other teachers to design and plan for the implementation of Tier 1 SEL service provision.
- Use data to develop Tier 2 social emotional groups for short-term targeted intervention (6 - 8 weeks) to support student academic success and social and emotional growth.
- Design and deliver the SEL curriculum, including safeguarding lessons.
- Work with students to create and adjust their class schedules.
- Be an advocate for students as needed.
- Working with families:
- Make referrals to appropriate school and community resources. Act as liaison for individual students’ outside specialists when needed.
- Meet with new students and their families to assist in their orientation, schedule creation, and transition into and out of Graded.
- Organize and/or facilitate informational events for parents, such as counselor coffee mornings and parent evenings.
- Collaborating with with teachers, administrators, and other school staff:
- Serve on grade level / divisional admission committees.
- Coordinate and process school documents and teacher recommendations for boarding/summer applications.
- Meet regularly with the Divisional Administration to discuss student issues.
- Meet regularly with the PP -12 Counseling team to review and develop the school counseling program.
- Provide recommendations for school staff regarding wellness activities and advocating for mental health support.
- Participate in the LS SST team meetings
- Receive, document, and report child safeguarding reports from students and adults in the community.
- Support and guide teachers to support student social emotional needs in the classroom and advisory/mentoring setting.
- Advise and communicate with CWW and other trip leaders regarding necessary precautions for students of concern, prior to trips.
- Design, plan, implement, and oversee a documented transition program for students moving from LS to MS.
- Work with the Lower School Grade 5 students and parents in semester 2 to plan and implement a positive transition to Middle School.
- Assist in the planning and facilitation of the LS Student Ambassadors program.
- Collaborates closely with LS administration to support student behavior intervention when needed and appropriate.
- A Graded teacher is expected to:
- Follow basic professional requirements regarding attendance, punctuality, appearance, and language.
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders in a timely manner and in culturally appropriate ways.
- Actively participate in professional development act
